Advanced Placement: Nurse Assisting

Advanced Placement: Nurse Assisting

 

Course Overview: Prepares the advanced placement nursing assistant student for the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification or Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) examination. The student will care for clients across the wellness/illness continuum within the scope of practice of the CNA/LNA. Includes basic problem solving processes specific to meeting the basic and holistic needs of clients, therapeutic communication skills, as well as interventions to ensure the needs and safety of the client. Provides opportunity for the student to show proficiency in the performance of basic nursing assistant skills and procedures through laboratory activities and participation in the care of clients. Licensing is the exclusive responsibility of the Arizona State Board of Nursing.


Prerequisites: One year full-time employment OR two years part-time employment of direct patient care within the past five years OR students who have successfully completed course work that included direct patient care experiences in allied health, medicine or nursing in the past five years, OR permission of the Division Chairperson.

Endoscopy Technician

GateWay Community College

The Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Endoscopy program is for individuals interested in assisting physicians and nurses with various endoscopic procedures, as well as providing basic care for the endoscopy patient. The endoscopy technician is responsible for preparing maintaining, and cleaning medical instrumentation and equipment. Students will learn how to handle endoscopes and accessories during various types of endoscopy procedures. 

 

IMPORTANT: Where selected as part of the program completion, the following general education and introductory courses must be completed with a 3.0 GPA to be added to the que of those waiting for an available cohort space to begin the core curriculum: [BIO160 or (BIO201 and BIO202)]; (ENG101 or ENG107); (ENG102 or ENG108); HCC/RES109 or proof of current American Heart Association Health Care Provider CPR Certification; [HCC130 or (HCC130AA and HCC130AB and HCC130AC and HCC130AD and HCC130AE and HCC130AF) or permission of GateWay Health Core Curriculum Coordinator]; (HCC145 or HCC146 or permission of GateWay Health Core Curriculum Coordinator); MAT15+ or equivalent course or satisfactory completion of a higher-level algebra mathematics course. 

 

Medical Assistant Career Path (Medical Assisting)

Phoenix College

In this program, you will earn a Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Medical Administrative Assisting and an opportunity to complete an additional CCL in Clinical Medical Assisting.

 

Students enrolling in this program will be required to complete Maricopa Community Colleges' health and safety requirements. To successfully complete this program, you must complete MAS101, MAS102, MAS103, MAS104, MAS201, MAS202, MAS203, MAS204, and MAS205. This can be completed over three semesters.

The Certificate of Competency (CCT) in Medical Assisting provides education and training for employment as medical assistants. Upon successful completion of the program, students are eligible to take the national certification exam.

Students enrolling in this program will be required to complete Maricopa Community Colleges' health and safety requirements as well as a reading assessment. To successfully complete this clock-hour program, you must complete MDC103, MDC104, MDC105, MDC106, and MDC130.

Patient Care Assistant Career Path (Nurse Assisting)

The Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Nurse Assisting prepares students for employment as a nurse assistant. The program combines classroom instruction with clinical laboratory practice and long-term care and/or acute care experiences. Students who complete the program are eligible to take a written and practical certification examination if desired to meet employment requirements to be a nurse assistant. Certification/licensing requirements are the exclusive responsibility of the Arizona State Board of Nursing.

Radiologic Technology

GateWay Community College

The Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Radiologic Technology is a full-time program providing educational activities preparing its graduates for certification, licensure, and employment as radiographers in the healthcare community. Graduates may also advance in their profession by pursuing continuing education, additional certifications, or a bachelor's and/or master's degree in a related field.

 

Radiologic technologists are the health care professionals who use medical imaging equipment to perform x-ray examinations in a variety of settings including, but not limited to, hospitals, physician's offices, clinics, medical imaging centers, surgical centers, and mobile imaging agencies. Technologists work in collaboration with other medical professionals to ensure high quality outcomes for the patient experience.

 

The Radiologic Technology program is an intensive, rigorous course of study with hands-on clinical experiences. Students will perform patient care and are educated in anatomy, physiology, math, physics, patient positioning, examination techniques, equipment protocols, radiation safety, and radiation protection. Students in the program will be exposed to blood-borne pathogens and infectious diseases.

 

IMPORTANT: Students must complete the following general education and introductory courses with a 3.0 GPA to be added to the queue of those waiting for an available cohort space to begin the core curriculum: BIO201, BIO202, (COM100 or COM110 or COM230), (CRE101 or equivalent by assessment), (ENG101 or ENG107), (ENG102 or ENG108), any approved general education course in the Social-Behavioral Sciences area, any approved general education course in the Humanities, Arts, and Design area, (MAT15+ or any approved general education course in the Mathematics area for which MAT15+ is a prerequisite).

After acceptance into the program and before the start of required courses in the Fall semester, students must complete the following courses in the Spring:

+ RAD101 Ethics and Law in the Radiologic Sciences 1

Types of Courses

Basic ESL II: The main focus is on developing basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills for everyday life. Examples of topics covered are reading and writing basic sentences and questions, speaking and understanding questions, and using basic vocabulary.

 

Grammar Classes: The main focus is on improving your understanding and use of English grammar in speaking and writing. Examples of topics covered in the different levels include verb tenses, vocabulary building, parts of speech, sentence construction, and punctuation.

 

Writing with Oral Practice Classes: The main focus is on improving your written and oral communication skills. Examples of topics covered in the different levels include punctuation, oral presentations and readings, the writing process, and writing paragraphs and essays.

 

Listening and Speaking Classes ESL: The main focus is on improving your listening and speaking skills. Examples of topics covered in the different levels include expressing your opinion, listening and note-taking, asking and answering questions, responding to requests, and giving presentations.

 

Reading Classes: The main focus is on improving your ability to read in English. Examples of topics covered in the different levels include vocabulary development, comprehension, using context clues to understand meaning, and writing summaries.

 

Pronunciation Classes: The main focus is on improving your pronunciation of English words. Examples of topics covered in the different levels include pronunciation of different vowel sounds, intonation patterns, word stress, and oral reading.

 

Vocabulary Classes: The main focus is on developing your vocabulary. Examples of topics covered in the different levels include learning basic English vocabulary related to people, medical/dental care, occupations and other activities, pronunciation, and identifying parts of speech.

 

General Vocational English as a Second Language: The main focus is on improving listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills for work. Examples of topics covered are giving directions and taking instructions, job safety, social and cultural skills, and producing job-related forms and reports.

 

Informal Conversational and Written English for Non-native Speakers: The main focus is on improving your speaking and writing English in informal settings. Examples of topics covered are idioms, appropriate verbal and non-verbal conversation behaviors, and effective use of electronic communication such as email and chat.

 

Preparatory Academic Writing for ESL: The main focus is on preparation for college-level composition and related reading tasks with a focus on critical writing, reading, and thinking skills and processes. Examples of topics covered are reading strategies, the writing process, technology in writing, and using outside sources to support ideas.
