Semiconductor processing technicians perform tasks in the manufacture of electronic semiconductors, commonly known as integrated circuits or microchips, that are used in cars, smartphones, and other everyday devices.

 

The demand for Semiconductor Processing Technicians is expected to grow 11% from 2024 to 2034, much faster than the average for all occupations. In 2024, the median pay for this job was $24.60 per hour or $51,180 per year. (Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics)

Course Details

This course offers an in-depth exploration of the semiconductor industry ecosystem, covering everything from career sectors to the fundamental materials used in integrated circuit (IC) fabrication. Students will build a strong technical foundation by reinforcing electrical and mechanical fundamentals and applying them to advanced systems, including circuits, transistors, sensors, pneumatics, motor controls, PLC’s, and electromechanical integrated systems. 

The curriculum provides a detailed walkthrough of the semiconductor process flow, spanning from initial lithography and etching to final back-end metallization and packaging. Hands-on training focuses on the critical infrastructure of the cleanroom, including the operation of vacuum pump systems, operation of industrial robots, gas delivery safety, and precise chemical handling. Finally, participants will master manufacturing efficiency through the study of metrology, root cause analysis (RCA), and quality control methods like Statistical Process Control (SPC).

Cost

No upfront cost! You will be eligible to receive $485 in tuition assistance upon successful completion, which fully covers the non-credit fees for this course.

 

Students who fail to successfully complete will be responsible for paying the cost.

Analyze Electrical Circuitry

Students will be able to apply Ohm’s, Watt’s, and Kirchhoff’s laws to analyze complex AC and DC circuits. They will also understand the roles of capacitors, inductors, and transformers in power distribution.

 

Maintain Cleanroom Safety Standards
Learners will demonstrate the ability to gown-up correctly and use personal protective equipment (PPE) essential for cleanroom environments. They will also identify the location and purpose of emergency equipment like eye wash stations and AEDs.
Evaluate Transistor and Power Control
Graduates will explain the operation of BJT and FET transistors and understand how relays are used to control power within semiconductor tools. This includes distinguishing between different protection devices like circuit breakers and GFCI.
Execute IC Fabrication Processes
Students will describe each unit process in IC fabrication, including doping, lithography, etching, and chemical mechanical polishing. They will also understand the significance of each step in the overall process flow.
Operate Industrial Robots
Students will safely operate and interact with industrial robot work cells using a teach pendant, including basic motion control, positioning, and understanding robot safety systems.
Operate Vacuum and Gas Systems
Participants will recognize various pump types and instruments used to monitor and maintain vacuum levels in manufacturing systems. They will also identify key components and safety measures required for hazardous gas and chemical delivery.
Troubleshoot System Leaks
Students will assemble and evaluate a small vacuum system,  measure base pressure, and apply structured troubleshooting techniques to identify and resolve leaks, ensuring system integrity in high-purity semiconductor environments.
Perform Precision Metrology
Learners will use common tools such as calipers, micrometers, and dial indicators to perform accurate inspections of parts and assemblies. They will apply measurement techniques that minimize errors and ensure compliance with standards like ISO and NIST.
Conduct Root Cause Analysis
Using techniques such as "5 Why" or fishbone diagrams, students will identify the underlying causes of equipment or process failures. This competency is vital for maintaining tool uptime and process stability.
Implement Quality Control Methods
Graduates will be able to interpret control charts and apply Statistical Process Control (SPC) to monitor and maintain manufacturing stability. This focus on quality helps ensure consistent product output.
Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Students will understand the critical role of SOPs in maximizing manufacturing efficiency and overall yield. Adherence to these procedures is fundamental to the high-stakes semiconductor manufacturing environment.
