Medical assistants typically specialize in either clinical or administrative duties, though some perform both roles. Clinical responsibilities primarily involve gathering and documenting patients' personal details and medical history. Other tasks they may undertake vary depending on the state, including conducting basic laboratory tests, managing contaminated materials, and sterilizing medical equipment.
Some assistants have additional roles like providing medication guidance or conducting phlebotomy. On the administrative side, medical assistants handle various tasks such as aiding patients with insurance claims, completing paperwork, coding data, and liaising with billing companies. They also manage inventory, order supplies, handle phone inquiries, and arrange appointments.
