Medical billing professionals play a vital role in maintaining accurate records, calculating patient charges, and managing payment files. Their responsibilities encompass reviewing medical records, determining the appropriate charges for healthcare services, preparing detailed statements, examining purchase orders, and keeping track of hours worked.
Medical coders bear the responsibility of gathering physician charges and patient data to ensure the precise and efficient submission of claims to insurance carriers. They utilize ICD-10 and CPT coding protocols to identify the appropriate codes for physician procedures and diagnoses, specifically for third-party billing purposes.

The U.S. Department of Labor predicts that the employment of medical records specialists is projected to grow 8 percent from 2022 to 2032, faster than the average for all occupations. About 15,000 openings for medical records specialists are projected each year, on average, over the decade.
The U.S. Department of Labor reports that the median annual wage for medical records specialists was $47,180 in May 2022. Keep in mind that pay rates vary depending on geographic location and experience.
